It sounds like Warner Brothers is planning two films based on three of the six volumes from Katsuhiro Otomo's graphic novel Akira that was first published in 1982. The films will be directed by Irish filmmaker Ruairi Robinson with the script provided by first-time screenwriter Gary Whitta.
The first film is to go into production right away, aiming for a release date in the summer of 2009.

Not to overshadow Anime Bento this week, but PEELANDER-Z, the self proclaimed Japanese Action Comic Punk Band is playing tonight, September 24, 2007, at the Exit/In (2208 Elliston Place. 321-3340). The doors open at 8:00 pm with performances by Seawitch and F.U.C.T. starting at 9:00 pm and Peelander taking the stage at 11:00 pm. The cover is $8 for this 18+ show. Balcony seats may be available.
